Into The Woods

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987.

Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason), in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera. The musical has been produced many times, with a 1988 national tour, a 1990 West End production, a 1991 television production, a 1997 tenth anniversary concert, a 2002 Broadway revival and a 2010 London revival. The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them further to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm. It also includes references to several other well-known tales.

By Joe DiPietro

Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey . His parents retired and moved to Florida . That doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in Jersey . In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job. The job he’s been waiting for—marketing executive—would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. He tells them. The news doesn’t sit so well. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. How could he betray his family’s love to move to Seattle , for a job, wonder his grandparents? Well, Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma do their level best, and that includes bringing to dinner the lovely—and single—Caitlin O’Hare as bait…we won’t give the ending away here. By Joseph Robinette

The Wolf: villain or victim? The Three Pigs: innocent or at fault? The cast will consist of 16-22 children who will play the beloved characters of the wolf, the pigs, the judge, and juror (who include such famous characters as Little Miss Muffett, Little Red Riding Hood, Old King Cole, Jack and Jill, Little Bo Peep and lots of other well-known characters). The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf deals with questions of guilt and innocence from many different points of view. It comes up with a surprising, yet eminently satisfying, conclusion in which no one escapes unscathed. And, as a bonus, a lesson or two is learned along the way. It is a true ensemble piece with delightful comedy and an intriguing story line. This one is sure to delight audiences of all ages.
